Being Safe and Secure at ATMs

ATMs are a fast and easy way to do your banking. ATMs provide a convenient way to withdraw cash, check account balances and transfer funds. We encourage customers to make electronic banking security a priority.

Here are some important tips to make ATM security your business:

1. Always observe your surroundings before conducting an ATM transaction. Park as close as possible to the terminal if it is a walk-up ATM. Observe the entire area from the safety of your car before getting out. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, leave the area at once.
2. ATMs should not be obstructed from view or poorly lit. If they are, go to another ATM.
3. Take a companion along, if possible, when using an ATM, especially at night.
4. Do not linger at the ATM machines - Minimize your time spent at the ATM by having your card out and ready to use.
5. If the ATM is in use, give the person using the terminal the privacy you expect. Allow them to move away from the ATM before you approach the terminal.
6. Protect your PIN - Stand between the ATM and anyone waiting to use the terminal so that others cannot see your transaction in process.
7. If anyone follows you after making an ATM transaction, immediately go to a crowded, well-lit area and notify the police.
